Local Fishing Report: Thursday 2018-04-12

Offshore

With the New Moon Phase on Monday the fish will be feeding over the next week or so. Conditions a bit choppy early today but looking good in the late afternoon and for tomorrow with east to northeasterly 15 to 20 knots tending north to northeasterly 10 to 15 knots during the afternoon and evening, with seas around 1 metre. Tomorrow, Friday the 13th, will have pretty good conditions with winds northerly 10 to 15 knots becoming variable about 10 knots during the morning then becoming north to northeasterly 10 to 15 knots during the day with seas around 1 metre. With the good conditions it's worth heading out to the inshore reefs to chase the schooling long tail tuna, a few mackerel and mixed bag of reef fish.

Cod, trevally and flathead from La Balsa Basin and mangrove jack around the structures and rock walls. Mud crabs and some flathead to 61 cm in the creeks, canals and generally throughout the river.

Caloundra: Trevally, mangrove jack and cod in Pelican Waters Canal. Whiting, bream, grunter and flathead on the flats between the bar and Golden Beach and in the creek mouths. Trevally and bream off the Muddies in the creeks and mangrove areas throughout the passage.

Keen angler, Will Robins landed this 61 cm dusky flathead in the canals in the Mooloolah River.

Conditions a bit choppy today but looking good for tomorrow with southeasterly 15 to 20 knots turning easterly in the evening, with seas 1.5 to 2 metres, decreasing to 1 to 1.5 metres during the morning. Winds will be southeasterly at 10 to 15 knots decreasing to about 10 knots in the morning, with seas around 1m and easterly swell around 1m inshore increasing to 1.5m in offshore waters. With easing conditions today it's worth heaping out to the inshore reefs to chase the schooling long tail tuna and mixed bag of reef fish.

Offshore

Conditions today will be fairly choppy to rough so be prepared to stay in sheltered waters, with winds east to southeasterly 15 to 20 knots, reaching up to 25 knots offshore north of Maroochydore during the morning and seas 1.5 to 2 metres. Tomorrow conditions are still fairly choppy with winds southeasterly 15 to 20 knots and seas 1 to 1.5 metres. Hopefully there will be more improvement by Monday and Tuesday. So when conditions improve go for a few coral trout, cod, snapper and parrot at North Reef. Similar species have been reported at Barwon Banks. Trout, Spanish mackerel, cod, grass sweetlip, cobia and tusk fish from Sunshine Reef. Mac and long tail from most of the closer inshore reefs.

Target mud crabs throughout river.

Maroochydore: Dart and whiting in the gutters between Twin Waters lifeguard and Pincushion. Jew, Mangrove jack, jew, bream and golden trevally in the Cod Hole. Bream, whiting and flathead along the Black Banks and Goat Island stretch, along with golden trevally at Cotton Tree. Still big mud crabs throughout the river particularly in the creeks.

Extended Fishing Report: Friday 2018-04-06

Offshore

Conditions today will be fairly choppy, so check conditions before going offshore and be prepared to stay in sheltered waters, with winds southeasterly 15 to 20 knots and seas 1.5 to 2 metres. Tomorrow conditions are still fairly choppy with winds southeasterly 15 to 20 knots and seas 1.5 to 2 metres. There will be some more improvement on Sunday. So when conditions improve go for a few coral trout, cod, snapper and parrot at North Reef. Similar species have been reported at Barwon Banks. Trout, Spanish mackerel, cod, grass sweetlip, cobia and tusk fish from Sunshine Reef. Mac and long tail from most of the closer inshore reefs. From east of the Wide Bay Bar and Double Island you can expect some excellent catches of big cod, yellowfin tuna, mackerel, pearlies, red emperor, scarlet sea perch, hussar and gold spot wrasse and mahi mahi.

Out and around Hervey Bay

Longtail and mack tuna and a few mackerel have been showing up Coongul Creek and between Wathumba Creek and Roonie Point. There have been few good coral trout, grassy sweetlip, blackall, good quality cod, tusk fish, and mackerel on the inshore reefs. Coral trout, moses perch, nannygai, tuskfish and spanish mackerel on the reefs out from Roonies. Queenfish have been taken on the rubble patches throughout platypus bay and from six mile arch. Great Sandy Strait, is producing, Barramundi, and threadfin salmon around the mouth of the Mary River including whiting, flathead and bream throughout. Barramundi and threadfin salmon in the lower Mary and Susan River. Barramundi, bream, grunter, whiting and Mangrove Jack in the lower Burrum River. There’s queenfish, golden trevally and giant trevally and a few barred and school mackerel around the Urangan Pier/Jetty. Banana prawns are running out from Maaroom and Ungowa. Estuaries and Beaches

Fraser Island:  Always best to travel closer to low tide as possible. There's heaps of erosion after the big seas and tides, particularly around the rocky outcrops like Poyungan and Yidney Rocks has made beach access impassable, so use the Bypass Tracks. Target dart, whiting, trevally and a few chopper tailor along the eastern beach gutters. On the western side of Fraser island there’s been plenty of whiting and catches of flathead and trevally, while in the creeks and the flats there’s a few good grunter bream and quality the muddies and some solid flathead have also been reported.

Rainbow Beach: There has been a lot of erosion on the beaches so take extra care and travel closer to low tide and probably best to give Mudlo rocks a miss unless on dead low tide untill the seas and swells ease back. Try for whiting, bream, flathead and dart up around Inskip Point where there is more shelter. When the wind and swell eases target jew in the gutters at night and go for flathead, dart, whiting in the gutters at Rainbow Beach, Double Island Point and Teewah Beach. Tin Can Bay is fishing well for whiting, bream, flathead, Trevally and mangrove jack in the snaggy areas in the creeks and a few good muddies. Mangrove jack, barramundi, flathead, estuary cod and mud crabs in Kauri Creek. A few good flathead, bream, trevally and mackerel from the Barge Crossing.

Conditions will be a bit choppy today with east southeasterly around 15 to 20 knots, seas at 1m  to 1.5m increasing to 2m offshore. The conditions will become rough with winds southeasterly up to 20 to 25 Knot during the day with seas again up from 1.5m to 2m.  Today will be worthwhile to head out and When conditions inprove go for a few coral trout, cod, snapper and parrot at North Reef. Similar species have been reported at Barwon Banks.  Trout, Spanish mackerel, cod, grass sweetlip, cobia and tusk fish from Sunshine Reef. Mac and long tail from most of the closer inshore reefs.

Deni Mariathi 78cm jew

Deni Mariathi landed this 78cm jew with the support of Bruce, Brad and Geoff at the Cod Hole on Easter Sunday/April Fools Day, on there last prawn bait cast, on a light rod and line combo for the day around 4.30 pm.

Offshore

Conditions are favourable with Easterlies at 15 to 20 knots, seas at 1m and increasing to 1.5m offshore. The conditions will stay the same on Tuesday.   Today will be worthwhile tohead out and chase a few coral trout, cod, snapper and parrot Noosa North. Similar species have been reported at Barwon Banks.  Trout, Spanish mackerel, cod, grass sweetlip, cobia and tusk fish from Sunshine Reef. Mac and long tail from most of the closer inshore reefs.

Estuaries and Beaches

Noosa: Reports over the long weekend of dart, whiting and flathead in the gutters along the beaches. The lower estuary is fishing well for flathead and whiting along the drop offs. A few queenfish, trevally and mangrove jack from Munna Point. Trevally and flathead in Woods Bays and Tewantin stretch. Target mud crabs throughout river.

Maroochydore: Dart and whiting inthe gutters between Twin Waters lifeguard and Pincushion. Mangrove jack, bream and golden trevally in the Cod Hole. Trevally Jack Javis Cod Hole

Offshore

Conditions: with winds today southeasterly 15 to 20 knots, reaching up to 25 knots offshore in the late afternoon and evening and big sees 1.5 to 2 metres. Tomorrow conditions settle down and are fairly good but still choppy with winds easterly 15 to 20 knots and seas 1 to 1.5 metres. and . When conditions improve particularly Monday be ready to go and chase a few coral trout, cod, snapper, tusk fish and hussar from the Hards. Trout, snapper and tusk fish from the Banks. Dolphin fish, pearl perch and pig fish from Caloundra Wide. Trout, Spanish mackerel, cod, grass sweetlip, cobia and tusk fish from Sunshine Reef. Mac and long tail Tuna from Sunshine, Halls, Coolum Reef, the NW fairway beacon and the Blinker.

Estuaries and Beaches

Noosa: When the sea settles down it will be worth chasing a few dart, whiting and jew over night in the gutters along the beaches. The lower estuary is fishing well for flathead. A few queenfish, trevally and mangrove jack from Munna Point. Trevally and flathead in Woods Bays. Flathead and grunter from along Tewantin stretch. Target mud crabs throughout river.

Maroochydore: Mangrove jack, bream and golden Trevally in the Cod Hole. Bream, whiting and flathead along the Twin Waters stretch. Golden Trevally whiting and flathead from Cotton Tree and around Goat and Channel Island. Still mud crabs throughout the river.

Mooloolaba: Todays Full Moon will have the fish on the bite through the weekend. Bream and Trevally around the rocks walls, pontoons and Jetties between the Mouth. Cale Cale and golden Trevally around Minyama Island. Cod, trevally and flathead from La Balsa Basin. Grunter bream from McKenzies Bridge area and sand and mud crabs throughout the river.

Caloundra: A few bigger bream from the boardwalk area. With the Full Moon be prepared to chase a few jew in the gutters along the beaches and in the deeper holes of the northern passage right though Easter. Golden and giant Trevally in Pelican Waters Canal. Whiting, bream, grunter and flathead between the bar and Golden Beach. Muddies in the creeks and mangrove areas throughout the passage.

Ben Corbett 1.4m Shovelnose

Ben Corbett caught his first shovel nose Wednesday at the Cod Hole on 20lb braid and prawns measured just on 1.4m.
