Local Fishing Report: New Years Eve Saturday 2016-12-31

Offshore

Hope you all have a safe and happy new year from the team at Swan Boat Hire! This week’s New Moon will have the fish feeding right through the weekend. Reasonable conditions early today with winds north to northwesterly 10 to 15 knots decreasing to about 10 knots in the morning then tending north to northeasterly 10 to 15 knots in the middle of the day. Winds reaching up to 20 knots late afternoon so there will be a very choppy afternoon sea breeze to make conditions uncomfortable and seas around 1 metre, increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres by early evening. More choppy conditions tomorrow with winds northerly 15 to 20 knots with seas around 1 metre, increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres during the evening. Double Island Point has been good for the bigger boats with squire, pearl perch, amberjack, jewfish, mahi mahi, slate bream, Maori cod, hussar, brown line sea perch, grass sweetlip, venus tusk fish and teraglin jew. Northern bluefin or longtail tuna in Laguna Bay and Big Hall's. Pearl perch, tuskfish, maori cod and spanish mackerel on Sunshine Reef. Spanish and spotty mackerel at Jew Shoal, while there’s pearl perch, estuary cod and large mouth nannygai on Massouds Reef and snapper, pearl perch, moses perch and spanish mackerel on North Reef. Spanish and spotty mackerel between the Inner Gneerings and Raper Shoal. Spanish mackerel off Point Cartwright, on the Gneering Shoals and Coolum Reef, snapper and mahi mahi at the Hards. Snapper, pearl perch and red throat emperor at Caloundra Wide.

Estuaries

Noosa: Catches of reasonable dart, bream and tarwhine along Teerwah Beach. There’s been plenty of good flathead throughout the system with several big fish released recently. Golden trevally to 3kg have been caught, in the lower estuary around the top of the tide. A few big flathead was caught and released and the odd tailor in Woods Bay. Plenty of mangrove jack feeding throughout the river system. Mud crabs in the mid to upper reaches.

Maroochydore: Quality whiting over night and golden trevally yesterday in the lower river. Few good jack in upper reaches and around substantial structures in the lower river. Flathead throughout the river and bream from the mouth of Eudlo Creek. Some good mud crab but plenty of undersize and female crabs to be returned throughout the river system.

Kawana: Good dart and whiting in gutters, south of Pt Cartwright. Trevally along the rock walls at the Mooloolah River mouth. Trevally, bream and gar from near the pontoon at La Balsa Park, the boat mooring and in the Kawana canals. A few big flathead and whiting in the sand basin and trevally around Minyama Island. Trevally and flathead from Mountain Creek. Mangrove jack in the middle river and in Mountain Creek in and around the bridge pylons and snaggy banks.

Caloundra: This New Moon phase will have the fish feeding right through the weekend. Dart, bream and flathead along the beaches as well as trevally and big flathead on the Happy Valley side of the Bar. Whiting off Golden Beach and Bells Creek mouth, flathead along the drop offs and jew in the deeper holes in the Passage, mangrove jack around the bridge pylons and rock walls.

Conditions reasonable with winds increasing to east southeast to 10 to 20 knots and seas around 1 metre to 1 to 1.5 metres. Tomorrow similar with winds east southeast to 15 to 20 knots. There have been Northern bluefin or longtail tuna in Laguna Bay and Big Hall's, while North Reef's had moses perch, venus tusk fish, mowong, grass sweetlip and snapper. The 12 Mile and Murphys have been good for tuna, mackerel, cobia, red throat emperor, maori cod, squire, coronation trout, tusk fish, fusilier, trevally and amberjack. There's a few Spanish and spotty mackerel on live bait between Currimundi Reef and the NW Fairway Buoy. Spanish and school mackerel on the Gneering Shoals at Murphys and Coolum.

Conditions okay with winds decreasing and becoming easterly 10 to 15 knots and seas around 1 metre, increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres offshore north of Maroochydore during the afternoon. Tomorrow okay as well with winds east to southeasterly 10 to 15 knots and seas around 1 metre, increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres offshore during the afternoon. So be ready to go Cougar One was drifting off the headland and outer Laguna Bay this morning, targeting the mackerel and tuna schools, when Leigh Johnstone's deep floater was taken by a quality large mouth nannygai. Try for Northern bluefin or longtail tuna at Big Hall's, while North Reef's had moses perch, venus tusk fish, mowong, grass sweetlip, teraglin jewfish, one snapper, sea bream, Maori cod, gold spot cod and pearl perch. Tomorrow should be okay with winds southeasterly 10 to 15 knots turning easterly during the evening and seas around 1 metre. So be ready to go with each window of opportunity both days. The 12 Mile and Murphys have been good for  tuna, mackerel, cobia, red throat emperor, maori cod, squire, coronation trout, tusk fish, fusilier, trevally and amberjack. There's a few Spanish and spotty mackerel on live bait between Currimundi Reef and the NW Fairway Buoy. Spanish and school mackerel on the Gneering Shoals at Murphys and Coolum.

Estuaries

Noosa: Dart, bream and whiting along Teewah Beach. A 60cm (2.5kg) grunter bream or javelin fish was taken on a live biddy in the lower estuary and a 78cm flathead was caught and released in the Woods Bay on Sunday morning's Noosa River Fishing Safari. Plenty of mangrove jack have been caught with some released throughout the river system. There's been plenty of good flathead, bream, whiting and trevally at the Noosa River mouth. In Weyba Creek there's a few quality sand crabs and mud crabs in the mid to upper reaches.

Maroochydore: Nice golden trevally in the lower river. A few good flathead, mangrove jack and jew at night in the Cod Hole. Mangrove jack in Petrie creek and along Bli Bli reach. Flathead and bream from the mouth of Eudlo Creek. Whiting in the morning around Chambers Island and Picnic Point. Some good mud crab in the deeper holes of the middle and upper river.

Kawana: Good dart and whiting in the low tide gutters, trevally along the rock walls at the Mooloolah River mouth. Trevally, bream and gar from near the pontoon at La Balsa Park, the boat mooring and in the Kawana canals. A few big flathead and whiting in the sand basin and trevally around Minyama Island. Trevally and flathead from Mountain Creek. Mangrove jack in the middle river and in Mountain Creek in and around the bridge pylons and snaggy banks.

Caloundra: Dart, bream and flathead along the beaches as well as trevally and queenfish on the Happy Valley side of the Bar. Whiting off Golden Beach and Bells Creek mouth, flathead along the drop offs and jew in the deeper holes in the Passage, mangrove jack around the bridge pylons and rock walls and trevally in the canals.

Offshore

Reasonable conditions with a bit of northerly sea breeze chop later in the afternoon with winds northerly 10 to 15 knots, reaching up to 20 knots inshore in the afternoon an seas around 1 metre, increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres inshore during the afternoon. Tomorrow we are swinging back to a cooler southerly with variable winds about 10 knots becoming south to southeasterly 15 to 25 knots from the south and seas okay early around 1 metre, increasing to 1 to 2 metres during the afternoon or evening. So be ready to go out early both days. Try for Northern bluefin or longtail tuna to 12kg taken at Big Hall's, while North Reef's had moses perch, venus tusk fish, mowong, grass sweetlip, teraglin jewfish, one snapper, sea bream, Maori cod, gold spot cod and pearl perch.
